Why Cancer?
We live in fear of cancer always hanging over our heads. Cancer strikes suddenly and there seems to be little we can do to prevent or predict it. When we were researching about the disease for this website, one staggering fact resonated especially strongly with us — three out of four families in the U.S. will have at least one family member diagnosed with cancer in his lifetime.
Cancer statistics speak volumes:
- More than 10 million people live with cancer in the United States alone.
- An estimated 1.5 million people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer in 2007.
- Nearly 40 percent of people living with cancer are under the age of 65.
- 24 percent of adults with cancer are parents who have a child 18 years or younger.
- The five year survivorship rates for young adults (age 20 through 40) with cancer have not improved in the past 30 years.
- One of every four deaths in the United States is from cancer.
- Over half a million people in the U.S. die of cancer every year — more than 1,500 people a day.
We are setting up this bike expedition in hope of making a humble contribution to the worldwide fight against cancer.
